ABOUT ROOT CANALS

A root canal is a procedure that extracts the decayed pulp from the central part of the tooth, reshapes the canal, and then fills and replaces it with strengthened filler. A root canal may be needed in the event of dental injuries, severe decay, or infection of the tooth pulp. If this problem is left untreated, it can cause extensive damage to the tooth structure. When the damage goes beyond what can normally be treated with a filling, a root canal is used to save the tooth and retain its integrity.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT A ROOT CANAL IS NEEDED?

Teeth that require root canal therapy are not always painful. However, signs you may need a root canal include severe toothache, pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity or pain in response to hot and cold temperatures, a dark discoloration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor.

THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE

When you come in for a root canal treatment with your Narberth dentist, you’ll undergo the following procedure:

  • First, the doctor will examine the tooth and the surrounding areas, both visually and with x-rays.
  • After the treatment has been decided on, the tooth will be numbed with local anesthetic and a dental dam will be placed over the area to protect it and keep it dry.
  • An opening will be made in the tooth so the pulp can then be removed from the pulp chambers and the root canals.
  • Finally, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and the canals will be sealed back up.

While this procedure is generally completed in one visit, more extensive cases may take multiple visits.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

You’ll have a temporary restoration after you leave your appointment with us. There should be no problem with you driving home afterward. You should make a follow-up appointment in a few weeks to receive your permanent restoration. If you experience any problems after your root canal, please get in touch with us immediately. Depending on the severity of the situation, we can schedule a free follow-up appointment so we can check your healing.
